Resolve to Build Your Network in 2009
December 11, 2008 - Gina Herald
How valuable is a network? Webster’s dictionary defines a network as “an association of individuals having a common interest, formed to provide mutual assistance, helpful information, or the like. Also, networking is the cultivating of people who can be helpful to one professionally.”
People naturally develop contacts throughout their lives. This “network” of contacts is a strong factor in a person’s success. Dr. Ivan Misner, author of The World’s Best Known Marketing Secret, says we need to build networks for three reasons: for 1) information, 2) support, and 3) referrals/business. We each turn to certain people for each of these categories. It is important that you invest in these people by staying in contact and keeping these relationships strong. Your network can make a huge difference in what happens when you are faced with difficult challenges because resources in all three areas may be needed.
Career Transition Professionals have statistics to show that 80% of jobs are found through networking (some say even a higher percentage). The current job market is extremely tight, and this trend is expected to continue, if not get worse, for many months to come. With so many talented and experienced candidates conducting a job search, the competition is fierce. It is critical that you continually invest in strengthening your network and not wait until a need arises. Make maintaining communication with strong contacts an ongoing effort.
It also is important to be aware of what is happening in your own industry. Remember that you are part of others’ networks as well. There is an old saying: “What goes around comes around.” Be willing to help others, as you may need them to help you. Don’t forget that a network is a supportive relationship of mutually-respected individuals.
With a new year preparing to begin, now is a good time to evaluate your current relationships. Then, take time to reconnect with people, as well as seek out people who can fill a need within your network. Investing time is required to build a healthy network; however, the return on that investment is exponential. Such important relationships take continual effort, so devote yourself to building strong resources for information, support and business.
